Kubrick's movie questions whether human nature can overcome its primitive instinct toward aggression: the Zarathustra Strauss theme of "progress, " used at crucial points as the human race advances, comes from Nietzsche's essay and concerns his doctrine of the Will to Power. As long as the principle of mechanical force (HAL) predominates over the spiritual, creative and peaceful ideal, humanity is in grave danger of utter extinction. This is no fantasy for our Stanley Kubrick.
