A very interesting movie. Interesting scenes, especially the first 20 minutes or so, which was my favorite part.

My favorite movie period. If you dont like this movie then you have no historical taste. This movie shows you what war is really like, and how gruesome it truly is. It tells of the heroism of 8 men who are willing(some of them anyway) to possibly sacrifice their lives to help bring home a private in the airforce whose 3 brothers were just killed. Great movie id recomend you just buy it so you can watch it as much as you want.

I have watched the movie 8 times, I am still planning to watch it again. It gives you a picture how ugly a war is. The movie was created realistically.

The best war movie ever made! It is intense, scary and has a lot of heart. The ending made me cry, it is also very sad. A true masterpiece!

This is the only one movie I gave a 10 so far (I'm pretty harsh with the rating) People should not get too preoccupied with the "patriotic" side of the movie - they should capture the human story Spielberg is trying to tell. The shooting of the film is incredible; the opening scene is a classic. I simply love this movie.

So far its been the most effective war movie I have seen ranking after platoon and deer hunter, Landing on the beach, was so close to reality... Approaching the car to the country house of the ryan's mother, and her re-action on the door step was extrimly natural. End of the movie when ryan asking his wife if he was a good man... was very emotional view too. And so on. I admire this movie because was very much close to reality of war, its ugly face and sorrow which creating in our heart, indeed got to say it was a great movie.

Just watched the movie again on DVD and I gave it a 9 - yes, it's a typical American take on a nasty piece of work called WWII. But the cinematography was realistic, the acting was good. I cried at the end. Good entertainment all around. I am saddened to see that there are no reviews by those over 50. War veterans of all stripes should see this - after all, aren't they the ones that have the right to tell us if it was accurate or not? They've been there.

The landing is impressive... But as soon as they breach the German defensive line, it shows it's a true American movie. Faceless german soldiers running out of the Widerstandsnester ("resistance nests")guns aiming the ground... May I point out that the men defending Omaha beach were Veterans (unlike the other beaches) These men never acted that way and clearly sets a very negative image of the outstanding superior force (even in 1944) that was the Wehrmacht... I can go on and on of all the flaws this movie has but let's go straight to the ending... where the few men left defending the bridge destroy most of the Waffen-SS engaged in this fight (obviously the Mustangs come and with pinpoint accuracy destroy the Tigers and save the day... ) and that thing about the German soldier being released by the ever so good Americans then getting shot at the end... what does that tell you? All germans were Nazis? All germans were treacherous bastards with no honor? Anyways, it has it's good moments but it's just another good ol' american bullshit story in the end... Even tho some of it is true most of it is just absurd.

Very good movie... men bonding with their brothers... the reality that must have happened during war and the trivial missions that turn out to be something great.

It's a good war movie, but no anti-war movie like platoon or full metal jacket... faceless german enemies, amercan flags and a group of a few men walking through france and defend a bridge against an overwhelming force... realistic? No... first scene is really impressive but the story which begins thereafter is like many other american war movies. The quality of schindlers list is never reached by spielberg. A captured german is set free by the "good" americans to kill later in the movie... what steven want to say with that? Kill all prisoners? Or all germans are born as evil creatures? The movie has good effects but sometimes I think that realistic war movies cant be made by americans... but who cares if the movie is successfull in cinema and brings a lot of money. Hollywood get paid by the pentagon...

One of Spielberg's great war films (along with Schindler's List) This is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Not only entertaining, but also so truthful in it's "war IS hell" message. I am grateful my generation never had to go through a war of this magnitude, and hope to never have one in my lifetime.

This film is my favorite movie b/c it had such a mental effect on me it changed my view and I really now honor all the soilders who fought for America and just appreciate life plus it was so realistic and great acting and scenes. Also another thing about the film is that it actually is based on the story of a guy by the name of niland so thats what always makes a show better.

This is possibly one of the greatest war movies ever. It has its own soul, fine story, and the visual effects are superb, although maybe too realistic (the landing on Omaha beach) But Mr Spielberg just wanted to portray his vision of that event in his own way. I would give this one 10, but since there is that "American sindrome" - the American soldiers are the best kickassers in da world - I gave it 9 because there's no political background (the story is fictious) Anyway, we're still talking about fine movie, go and see it!

Barry Pepper is a cute actor. One good thing about him in Saving Private Ryan is that he prayed and quoted Bible scriptures before he shot. That showed that he was a Christian in the movie. I was scared when I saw other soldiers get their arms and legs blown off, a soldier lying on the beach with his guts on top of him, and Tom Hanks dragging a man who was just blown on half across the beach to safety. Saving Private Ryan was very bloody all the way though. I watched who all died and how. One of the bloodiest scenes was Giovanni Ribisi, who played as the medic, had three acorn sized bullet wounds in his stomach, plus one exit wound in the small of his back. He was bleeding like crazy to the point where every time the other soldiers in his group wipe up the blood that had came out of him. More would come out. The more blood they wiped up the more came out of him. That medic virtually bled to death. I was very queasy in the stomach that first time I saw Saving Private Ryan. I even like Matt Damon who played as the determined soldier that lost all three of his brothers. The reason he was determined was because even through his great loss, he was informed of after he was found, he decided to stay on in the war and fight to the very end. He wanted to be strong for his brothers and not give up hope and go on with his life. That movie was so good that I kept going back to the show and watching it over and over when it was rereleased. Saving Private Ryan is the most serious war movie ever made. I own the video of it. I even like going to the University Of Illinois Undergraduate Library's Media Center and watch Saving Private Ryan on DVD.

Very good film, but... I have a few moans. First off, this is american propaganda of how the U. S saved the world. Number two, No black people? In the first wave attack on D-Day? People the world has moved on for the better but come on, 1945! Blacks were second class citizens, they were absolute war heros through and through, but NO-ONE CARED. Number three Was it only america in the war? Oh no now I remember, France, Russia, Italy and England also had minor roles to play didnt they. The U. S'only joined when they were attacked. England and france faught ALONE, then when france surrendered, ONLY ENGLAND for about five years. Saying that, this was an utterly fantastic (if narrow) re-telling of the horrors of war, a must see flick.

Way too long! This movie is about the ugliness and reality of war. It does not glamorize war and THAT is really about the only positive aspect to this film. It was way too long, and it all could be summarized in the first 20 minutes and last 10 minutes of this film. The violence was very much Hollywood style and I had to hold my stomach not to vomit. Don't eat before watching it if you are going to watch it anyway and not take my advice that this film is not worth it.

I disagree with those who believe that this movie had too much gore. Spielberg had a goal, and he met that goal. That goal was to bring to an audience the most realistic features of war men and women have to go through in situations that occur even today. I thought this movie was a masterpiece and I recommend those who like action (ANY kind of action) , to go, buy/rent/whaterever this movie. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the ending. I didn't think the story was wrapped up too nicely.

This is one of the great, powerful movies that come along every so often. I had always respected what my grand father had done for me in world war two and until I saw this movie thought I understood the extent of their (the soldiers) struggle in europe. This film is a definite "must see" much like the book "all quiet on the western front" the tale is gripping and disturbing in one fell swoop.

Hollywood trash! This film is just one of many Spielberg-american-cliched-and-propagandist wastes of film. There are two main problems with this film. Firstly, Spielberg, as with all his serious films, tries to pretend that he is recreating an accurate historical documentary. But infact, it is a filtered and narrow historic depiction, stubbornly presented in such a restricted form of cinema, that it doesn't allow the audience judge anything for themselves. The extent of the restrictive portrayal is so great that this film is quite simply American propaganda. Secondly, this film has a weak narrative. The film is about a group soldiers who walk for an hour and a half (screen time) to find Private Ryan-- who doesn't want to leave! In the end you realise the film is composed of three or four important scenes weakly strung together, that doesn't make for strong narrative. The only strong point this film has it's impressive effects... From a Hollywood production!? How typical. If you want an accurate history lesson, read a book and chose it wisely, if you want to see a good Spielberg movie rent an Indiana Jones.

I think that everyone in the planet should have watched this movie. Usually, we see the result of a war. This movie actually brings you into a war. You feel what the soldier feels. After you watched this movie, you know how horrible a war is. This is an typical movie that has the combination of commercial components and strong messages. This is the best of the best.

Saving Private Ryan managed to do to me what only a combination of action/drama/comedy movies can do. It kept me at the edge of my seat in the intense battle scenes. The acting was genuinely good. The graphic nature was only excessive in the very first battle scene (it was not necessary to see the guy screaming Mama with his guts out). Otherwise, no other movie has been able to show me the intense horror and the gravity of war. The soldiers did not have romantic deaths like in most other movies about world war II. In American history, I thought only Vietnam was horrific, but this movie surely changed that picture. It is one movie that I absolutely loved, but I don't think I can tolerate seeing it one more time. I am not American and have no relatives who fought in WWII, so I cannot relate, yet I can feel it through this movie. The only other war movie comparable to this one is Glory. This is one movie definitely worth seeing. If you don't like it, you probably missed something.

My favorite book lay in my grandfather's closet for 11 years before I got to read it. It was a collection of short stories about World War 2. The battle of Normandy was narrated by an American Veteran. He discribed in detail what it was like to dodge bullets and bombs and make it to the hills by the shore. There were photos in the book as well. All my life I've imagined what it must have been like to live that American soldiers' experience. The battle of Normandy in Saving Private Ryan matches exactly its description in my book. It instilled emotions in me which I can imagine were close to that of the American soldier while he was living the real experience. It's the most intense and graphical discription of the second world war that I have ever seen or read. The cast of heros in this movie are large but each one of them have individual and significant roles. Its one of those movies that I'll remember for the rest of my life. Two thumbs up!!
