For me it's Tom Hank's best work. Just a man and a volleyball for better than two hours and I wasn't bored for a minute. This is not to say some folks won't be. Anyone who was, for instance, bored with Magnolia, may also not have the patience a movie like Cast Away demands. This is not to say the movie is strange like Magnolia, it's actually pretty straight forward, but it is a man alone on an island with a volleyball for over two hours. The fact that Hanks had me completely captivated the entire time was why I consider his performance in this movie, one one of the greatest acting performances I've ever witnessed.

The movie Cast Away deals with the concept that people, in the grand scheme of things, do not have as much control of their lives as they like to think, as seen in the character of Chuck Noland (played by Tom Hanks) Although there are other characters, it is his character that experiences the physical shock, deals with nature and is brought back to life, so to speak. So it should be and is from his character that we hear him recount the meaning and message of the movie in the scene left out intentionally to highlight the inner journey he went through, to end up back where he started from. He says to his coworker and friend at the end of the movie; that, when he was on the island summit testing his noose and it failed, he realized that he was powerless and it is this realization that ultimately became his warm blanket of comfort as he put it. Up until that point in his life he had to be the one in control, the trouble shooter, dealing with every situation and rescheduling to make everything happen according to time. When the branch broke on the summit he realized the situation really is he had no control over anything and couldn't even take his own life. He now had his rest in that thought of just being alive. The resolve to let things happen as they would left him on the island for half a decade until the wind brought him material to build a raft to get into the shipping lanes, for his rescue and continue his life the way it would, however it would, given life for others had moved on. The biggest source of anxiety man has is thinking they are in control when they are not."You can get killed waking the doggy"-HEAT," Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying"- Shawshank Redemption," Anonymity is Like a Warm Blanket"-Mission Impossible, ok the last one is out of place; but, it comes from the same sentiment of comfort Chuck's character uses it. People are always being told to get out of their comfort zone and take control of their life. I think you take control of your life when you are doing what you want to be doing and realize stuff happens and let the chips fall where they may regardless of the situation you find yourself in. The only thing I couldn't figure out is why the title is two separate words instead of Castaway...

This is a very original movie. Tom Hanks is a great actor. Its very interesting to see how these guys survives for soo long stranded on an island. Wilson is an awsome add to the movie. Its funny to think that a volleyball could make a movie funny.

Rented this one on DVD and I thought it was fantastic. The plane crash was so realistic, it's really amazing he even survived that!! The rest of the film has Hanks learning how to survive on a desert island both physically and emotionally with his imaginary friend 'wilson'. The writer of the film was actually subjected to this experience in order to understand how a person would survive back in the stone age so the writing was very realistic. What was in the package at the end? I heard it was a GPS uplink device, but hey, the movie makers did this so you could use your imagination.

This really was an excellent movie. I wasn't sure how good a movie would be where more than half of the screen time had only one character, but Hanks really shone. It was a long movie, but I didn't care-the time just flew... until he was back home again. I found that the plot seemed to drage a bit then. I liked the ending too-not traditional-where would he go from there?

I cannot think of any other movie which is better then Cast Away. Tom Hanks has proven once again how great of an actor he is. The scenes of Hanks with Hunt towards the climax are perfect and even though there isn't much exchange of dialogues between them, there expressions speak out volumes. This movie is simply flawless and will always be remembered.

Cast Away is Tom Hanks in his best role since Forrest Gump. It's the story of a FedEx man who gets stranded on a desert island after his plane crashes. Since the plot isn't all that eventful, I'd been expecting to be bored watching Tom Hanks talk to himself on an island for a long time. I couldn't have been more wrong. Cast Away is brilliantly acted and is even amazingly funny at certain moments. It's also the only movie I know of that has ever made me feel sorry for an inanimate object. And at times, I felt myself following the same thought processes as Tom Hanks' character, thinking I'd do things the same way he did in that situation. Tom Hanks earned an Oscar for this role, and it was well-deserved. My advice to everyone is go see this movie!

The best movie ever! It could be tied together a little better near the ending, and it left me thinking a few things and you will notice that too, but keep in mind, that it has what all great movies should have: plot, characterization, mystery, drama, action, comedy and a little thrill by the bit. Take into consideration as well, that it was VERY realistic, and if you were in his shoes, you might be doing pretty well the same thing. Any more talking, adventure or drama and it would've been fictional and unrealistic. It was put together very well. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and even made me puke at one point or another which was perfect. That's more than I can say for a director I've never heard of and who's name I can't even pronounce. Helen Hunt was a perfect match, Tom Hanks was fab as usual and I will give it 2 thumbs up for Wilson who was my favourite character, by the way. I thought it would be one of those sappy "Oh no, we've crashed! Let's build a tv out of feathers and coconut shells" type of movies, but it certainly was not. It was so unpredictable and, well it's what's expected from Tom Hanks of course. Take it from me and see this movie from beginning to end no matter how odd the beginning may seem. It will drastically change you're entire outlook on life and how things could change from being a busy life, to a difficult world of you're own. SEE THIS MOVIE!!!

This movie is really really a must-see. It's very sentimental and although Tom Hanks don't say much, I think he should have won for the best actor. And of course, for best supporting actor, his great friend Wilbur. Go see it.

I appreciated the 2nd act for what you were allowed to feel with the character - isolation, anxiety, and determination - Hanks is good here, but the directing and cinematography (and lack of manipulative music) is what really moved me. That being said, stop watching a few minutes after he is rescued. The ending (3rd act) is really teasable, I guess the directors just didn't recognize what terrain they were on.

Well, I was bored at this movie. The beginning was okay, the middle where he was on the island was great (Tom Hanks is such a good actor) but the last act was terrible. It was just so boring. He wasn't exactly acting like he'd been on an island for five years and just came back. I think some crucial areas were missing.
