I found this film almost as terrifying as "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." It has the same unexplained total destruction of young people who are regarded with extreme hatred as they are overcome by some Thing alien to human life and to nature. The Witch element perhaps refers to a state of primitive dread where there is no appeal to salvation and preservation of existence by any current religion, such as Catholicism. Films like this, maybe "The Exorcist" too, express crisis in regard to the religious life, not just our present materialistic social system.
