Saw this movie again recently and was pleased at how well it stands the test of times. I guess things like neurotic governments and UFO's never go out of style. Where Spielberg really excels at a director is getting great performances from children, and this is no exception. The little boy who played Barry was fantastic and the kids that played Richard Dreyfus's children, especially the oldest boy, were also very good. It is the creation of real characters in this sci-fi story that makes this a great movie. It does tend to plod a bit, especially the climactic scene, but I think it only detracts slightly from this great movie.
