Great sets, life on the ships for ol captain jack aubrey and the boys seems pretty rough. Amazing boats and great action, it really feels authentic (but how would I know)

I personally didn't really enjouy this movie... I tried to concentrate on the scenes, but I had a hard time... there is just so way you could compare to another movie such as TROY or the LOTF. There's just no comparassent. Master and Commander is not a movie worth seeing.

Firstly: I don't understand what some people are raving about in regards to historical truth etc. What history? --this so-called historical naval-true-to-life has no real significance, really! Think about it... this wasn't a film dedicated to any major historical event! In fact, it was a collage of cliches: sea storms, captain who is noble yet carries a personal agenda etc. If the movie is historical --what does it get across to the viewer---frankly nothing-- because the context--the history-- that should have been developed, was overshadowed by Russell Crowe playing the violin. Secondly, all of you who scorn Hollywood stunts and effects. This movie actually had as many effects and stunts as the narrative could afford. The movie does display the typical ocean/ship effects seen in this genre of films-- Thirdly, for those who criticise the opinions of individuals who disliked the film: you are not more intelligent, or wise, or more authorised to critique the film. Perhaps it is your childhood longing to return to Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin adventures. It is evident that these adventures do not appeal to the youths of today, instead, they evoke sentiment in our older audience. Have fun..

My brother left me watching the movie for about 15 minutes. Once he came back he asked "did I miss anything" Guess what! He missed absolutely nothing! The movie is so disappointingly boring---If you want to see ships and nice scenery you are better off watching Pirates of the Caribbean. This movie has no plot... a major waste of time. I will strongly disagree with ANYONE who thinks otherwise.

I was riveted by the adventure, scenery, and characters. Wonderful movie. So nice to see an action/adventure/historical movie not bogged down by an unneccessary and silly romantic twist.

This movie, good intentions aside, turned out more like a good PBS movie. Very nice epic imagery. But with only one type of imagery the story then has to become the shoulders of the movie, which did not hold this movie up. Very boring overall, but a good history piece.

I usually like slow-moving movies that are subtle, but this one just bored me most of the time. There were several moments that almost redeemed it, however, and overall I cannot be too critical of this movie. I thot The Perfect Storm was a better example of a slow moving movie at sea that worked.

Excellent movie should have won the OSCAR! Much better than "lord of the rings".

If you have more than a handful of brain cells then I whole heartedly recomend this movie to you. Peter Weir has made another masterpiece. This is a movie to stand alone apart from all the mindless eye candy that Hollywood churns out like so much fatty butter. Treat yourself to the cream and see this movie. If, however you can't stand movies that take their time to develope depthful characters and build plot then please go see Dawn of the Dead which is a great picture of this age's populace of walking zombies that insist on mindless sensory input.

I really wanted to like this movie because I am a huge fan of Russell Crowe (ever since I saw The Insider) All the critics were saying that the picture was Oscar-worthy and my expectations were high. Unfortunately, I found that it moved WAY too slowly so I can't say that I would reccommend it. The one really cool scene was when the doctor operated on himself. Ouch!

Excellent footage of life at sea. Felt like you were on the actual ship with the actors. Crowe showed so many dimensions to his character. The fighting scenes between the two ships was an amazing, visual trip back to history class. Loved the ending!!! A must see movie for the big screen!!! Highly recommend it!

If this movie was made in a year not contending with The Lord of the Rings movies it would clean up at the Oscars. I went to see it because Peter Weir is one of my favorite film directors, so this critique may be biased. The director selectively played scored music in the movie (the first battle sequence had no music) and that worked well, since I had to pay attention to the battle. It departed from the some usual swashbuckling and war at sea movies, where it focused on the plot and was not action every minute. Furthermore, I do not see many movies where the main theme of the movie is a cat and mouse pursuit between two warships. In the final confrontation Russell Crowe's use of the insect hiding on a branch to hide from opponents in trapping the enemy ship by "playing possum" was brilliant.

I have read all 20 books that follow the adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, and the people that touch their lives. I have seen the movie 3 times and shout "Huzzay" each and every time. Peter Weir may have taken liberties, as is his right, but the essence of life aboard a royal navy ship man-of-war was alive with the all the characteristics and wonderful expressions found in the books, I. E."sails all ahoo"; "make it so". All the characters in the movie were what I would expect if the people in O'Brian's book could step out of the pages. The close bond between Jack and Stephen and their musical interludes is true to the books, and I can find no fault here. If this movie does not capture your imagination and carry you into another time and place then I suggest you stick to contemporary themes where predictability and familiarity are the norm. I for one would really like to see a trilogy that continues with their adventures and gives us their relationships with those left on shore.

I don't understand the hard criticism this film has endured. It's a great adventure movie. All the elements are there to make it enjoyable. Some people went to see it expecting an action movie which it is not. It's beautifully filmed and the actors are good. I must admit, it is not Russel Crowe's best performance. He was more convincing in A Beautiful Mind and Gladiator. The hardships of battle at sea in the 15th century are well portrayed and one can really feel the sheer violence of the battles in the fight sequences. All in all, an excellent movie with a good cast. Only 2 things bugged me a little. They should have dropped the last 5 minutes which serve absolutely no purpose. Also, the scenes with the Captain and the medic playing music were very unrealistic (almost funny) You can really tell that they are not real musicians and pretend to play. Still, these little things don't spoil the movie at all. I recommend it to those who enjoy historical adventure movies with a plot. Those seeking non stop action and special effects need not bother.

Having now seen all five of the movies nominated for best picture this year, I wish I were an Academy member so I could vote for Master and Commander. WHile I don't think it will win, I think it really ought to. This movie is so, so wonderful: great acting, great action, great scenery, great storyline, great ending, great in general. It had everything, and the ending was sooo not a hollywood ending. It didn't really explain much and it left you wondering how everything would turn out. I like that. I loved this movie.

A superb presentation of the brutal challenges of life at sea in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era, it mingled the psychological stresses which the commander alone must face, including his own friendships, the dilemmas of command and the harsh brutality of naval warfare. A classic for naval history buffs.

This movie is fairly well done, providing you are in the mood for a really intense drama. It is slow moving and not all that action packed, but I did appreciate seeing it. It would have been a bit better if I had been in the mood to watch it.

Fairly intelligent. If you're looking for a movie to make you re-evaluate your life, then this is not it. It has a simple storyline, nice scenery and complex issues. There is quite a bit of fighting as well, but the focus is on the struggle, not the victory.

I saw this movie while on vacation in Maine and found it to be very well made and a very pleasant change to the typical contrite garbage that is being foisted upon the paying customers of this industry. If you are a fan of movies like "The Fast and the Furious", stay away... please.

The plot had interesting potential, but none shone. It's quite frankly, boring at times. Though the acting was at it's best. You can't really have an involving story with only two locations in the entire film; the ship, and an island.

It is so refreshing to see a movie that clearly endeavors to depict the way things really were. I'm not surprized to read that some reviewers found the movie boring - because you don't see wild car rides, shoot outs, and all the rest of the unbelievable hollywood 'magic'. However, Hollywood also creates magic when it re-captures a place and event in time. I thought it was a tremendous movie. The story may not be true to history but in watching the movie you can feel that you are living in history.

Sketchy and shallow. I expected more from Russell Crowe. Go to see if you have nothing else to and wish to "kill" 2 hours of your life.

My father, who is quite the British navy affianado, felt this movie was very true to history. From my side - I just thought it was a brilliantly produced and acted naval drama - no politics or BS - just an extremely well told story. Interesting to note - in the book, the Brits are chasing an American vessel, not a French one as in the movie. Heaven forbid that Americans ever be portrayed as "the bad guys"!

Not a "bad" film, quite good acting, reasonably good character development, but the story line lacked depth. I longed for more compelling attchment to the characters. Glad I saw it on a tuesday night.
