This must be counted as one of my all-time favorites. A masterpiece without doubt. This movie will leave you in deep thoughts when you leave the theatre or turn off your dvd player. It is a dramatic study of social dynamics and our inner demons. If you find the premise of the movie hard to believe, it is not meant to be, just as "Hamlet" is not. I would recommend anybody to see the movie to experience the potential of cinema as an instrument for art.

I found this to be a really interesting approach to film-making and entertainment. How important are each of the elements of a film to you? Here we had plot, characters but no sets. It totally worked for me.

I watched this film on dvd last night, thoroughly enjoying. It was better than I expected. From my understanding it explores the same theme that previous Lars van Trier films have done. That of inherent goodness, does it exist? To me this film continues the theme played out in Breaking the waves. This is film and theatre at its riveting best... even though I must admit it takes getting used to the format initially, it is well worth the stay..

The movie was intellegent as the director uses minimal stage settings that work all your imagination power to complete the comprehension. This movie will not be popular as the mainstream values/principles are brutally challenged. The main theme of the movie is too pessimistic about human nature. That explains why the the movie did not get the award..

An Unexpected staging for a mvoie. I was concerned at the outset that the movie would be a sleeper. But after the first 30 minutes I became absorbed in the story. It is really brillantly done and very original. I was entertained and the questions and thesis of the movie leave me still trying to unravel the deeper meanings of the movie.

I think people who give this movie a low rating expected to see a movie that would entertain them. Instead, Dogville gives the sparse structure of a story and moves slowly. Similar to Dancer in the Dark, the director makes the viewer feel empathetic to the fate of the character which Nicole Kidman plays. Some say that the movie portrays and or questions "America." I am still undecided on this topic, but nonetheless recommend seeing this movie.

This is the best movie I have seen in months. Once you adapt to the set, and settle into the story, it's phenomenal. A fantastic performance given by Nicole Kidman, and a very thought provoking movie. Incredible.

The must film in Hollywood always have this... Amazing Efects and always have a great prodution... I don't know... just, you know... Dogville have something else... have something besides the great prodution and efects that Hollywood is always looking for. Just, this film is the real truth about the movies. That... have this... beauty... that seems like, you know, "whatever efects or 'big money' whatever film had, doesn't matter... If the movie has this 'Something else, something great and spectacular' that Dogville have." Its seems Dogville is the film that... make this affirmative come true. Really spectacular above all thing... at all! And Without that BIG PRODUTION of Hollywood. I don't know, but Dogville should be in the oscar, I think. A great movie. Nicole really done herself..

It's been four hours since we finished watching Dogville and I'm still thinking about parts of it, and writing this review (which I usually don't do) I came out of this film wanting to understand more, and not feeling that I understood it. I recommend it if you are patient.

I hadn't read the reviews before going and was shocked at the lack of scenery. It took me a while before I adapted to the theatre type scenery. However, at one point I realized that the story was growing on me and the ending wraps everything up with a bang! Nicole Kidman gives a stellar performance in a role where almost all the emphasis is on her. Many people left the theatre after about half an hour. For those who stayed, they watched a thought provoking movie. A movie which you won't forget for a long time.

This film was designed to not let you sit there and watch. This was meant to pick you up, shake you around and leave you wondering "what was that all about." If you didn't stay to the end you missed the point and I mean the very end. Even the end credits seems to reverse what the final dialogue was trying to get across. Reviewers seem to either love it or hate it and there is enuff in it for everyone to take what they want and say whatever they want to say about people, cruelty, the poor, revenge, etc. In the end, it was well worth and it's a movie that will stay with you for quite some time. Isn't that what the good ones are all about?

We saw dogville, and expected it to be an interresting and orginial piece with Nicole Kidman. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We left after half an hour, because we found it ridiculously boring, and we couldn't stop laughing and did not want to disturb the other viewers. Unless you want a good laugh or a good nap, do not go see this movie.

If you have seen Dancer in the Dark or Idiots and you loved them and you were so excited to see another great movie from Lars, then calm down and don't even bother. This concept belongs to theathres and there it would be greatly approciated but in cinema... why? He did much better stuff before. People are so touched by the story. Come on, the story is a fairy tale and the end of the movie is just too much (or way not enough) for my taste.

This movie seems to break all the rules for modern films. No physical or visual tricks, it almost seems as if it was filmed in black and white with the interior of a closet as its set. The intellectual and emotional tricks soon take over. The handful of Dogville's inhabitants, self-sufficient and hardworking individuals all, show their inner souls as opportunity presents itself. Their character changes are no more startling than that of Nicole Kidman's character. Many will not be able to sit through this overly long film. For me it was an examination of the human condition; more an exercise in the workings of the soul than 'entertainment'.

Dogville is dark, funny, and unbearable at times. The setting is genious, and without the constant reminder of its artifical background, it would be too painful to watch - the acting is that good. I needed to recover after watching this movie, but nonetheless it was an amazing dark satire. The last hour of it is really heavy - but it makes you think.

This movie is for people who are real cinephiles as it is so different in its presentation. To start, be aware that this movie is orchestrated as a theatre play and it is not meant to entertain you. Lars Von Trier means to make you think and feel revolted as you look deep down into the soul of people. It is super clever. Best performance by Nicole Kidman, riveting. Human nature at its best and at its very worst. This movie needed three hours to properly cover the transition of each of its character to fit into its grand finale. Don't miss it. As far as I am concerned, it is a masterpiece, go see it now.

I saw "Dogville" and it is as it starts- a story told in 10 separate parts. Anyone who didn't wait for this films credits has no right to rate this film. The 9th and final chapter made all the difference. While the intro and first eight chapters were significant this film seemed painful in many ways. In some ways it is sort of like "Straw Dogs" where the weight of the film rests in the conclusion. The theme remains sadly generalizable. It is not really entertainment- it was challenging. Do not expect this to be a light film but listen, watch, critique, and acknowledge.

I am very difficult to please as I am a passionate cinephile and therefore not easily impressed. Dogville... WOW!!!....It should have won at the Cannes Film Festival instead of Les Invasions Barbares! But the French were not about to give a prize to a film with "American" actors in it, considering their differences regarding Irak at the time. I now understand why Nicole Kidman was so disappointed. As far as I'm concerned this is one of her best performances. Lars Von Trier is always thought provoking, that is why I enjoy the originality of his films. I was hanging on to every word spoken, every bit of facial expression. I loved the theatre setting idea. So original. Even though the film lasted 3 hours, I was not impatient. You could hear the actors thinking. It was very powerful. Yes, the world can be cruel...naive people must be on their guard. Sad but true. Reality sucks. I felt a lot of emotions during the film. The depiction of men by Von Trier is more than one can bear, almost every single one of them is selfish and disgustingly cruel taking advantage of Grace with their carnal desires. Women will feel revolted by certain scenes. At the end you feel that vengeance is warranted to compensate for the indignities and cruelty suffered by Grace by the dogs of Dogville, men and women included. This is a masterpiece,a chilling classic, don't miss it.

This movie is not for everybody, I'll give you that, but for what it is, it is nothing short of a masterpiece! Production wise, writing wise and acting wise, this film is absolutely riveting. It will leave you thinking, cursing, laughing, and heaven forbid, looking at yourself in the mirror! It's a mediocre yet fascinating metaphore for today's society and humanity as a whole (No, it's not just a jab at America) and Nicole Kidman delivers one of her most mesmerizing performance to date. At the end, you'll find yourself shaking your head, asking yourself... Am I any better than anyone else in Dogville? BRILLIANT!

This is a brilliant film but a hard movie to love. It is not easy to be placed in a position of omniscience and then told, "Ok. Now you know everything. You have seen and heard it all. You have the power to judge and the power to cary out that Judgement. What will you do? ". When does good become bad? Where are the lines. These questions are all the more disturbing after having seen The Passion of the Christ where the audience is forced to ask itself "What do I believe, and when does faith become fanaticism (a synonym for passion)? Intersetingly Jeasus, sitting on the right hand of God chose very differently that Grace sitting on the right hand of her father. Brilliant but painfull.

This was the worst movie I'd seen since "Dude, where's my car" (I need to stop seeing movies without researching them on my own first. ) I was disappointed in everything about this so-called film. The acting was poor, the set was horrible, and the filming was jerky and irritating. I felt like I was watching a bad high school play. The fact that they won so many awards just goes to show you how the people in cinema take themselves way too seriously. Then again, the fact that they obviously didn't spend money on anything besides actors does suggest that no producers or studios were willing to fund such trash. Don't waste your money or your time.

I went into this moving knowing nothing about it other than it had an outstanding cast. After 15 miniutes of choppy camera movements and wierd camera angles I was nauseous. I found the narrator, John Hurt's monotone voice to drag and put me to sleep. I wouldn't even classify this as a movie, it's a play that was filmed. The chalk outlines designating walls, roads and shrubs was too much! This was the most boring, film I have ever seen. Many have called it "amazing" a "cinematic genius" but I left after 35 minutes. I was not the only one, several followed behind me and I was at the premier! Save your money, if you're that curious wait for the video, this is not one that must be seen on the big screen.

GENIOUS, GENIOUS! Creativity at its best. Masterpiece in its true form. Nicole Kidman delivered the results yet again. Van Trier surprises us one more time. Van Trier was able to show the true nature of human beings in a controlled environment, yet so true!!! Lars talent is that he knows how to capture the RAW side in the human behavior. He did so in Dancer in the Dark by pushing Bjork to the extreme. As well as, transforming the innocence/serenity of Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) into complete sanity. Over and over again, Lars demonstrates the Ying & Yang of the human face.

Dogville, a highly stylized allegorical tale about small-mindedness in a big country, is not for everyone. It is darkly funny, intellectually challenging and obliquely didactic. It also grows bleaker over the course of its nearly three-hour running time..
