This movie is eternally confusing because the main person, a Korean War hero, played by Laurence Harvey, was conditioned by "communists" to assassinate a moderate presidential candidate so that his stepfather, an ultra fanatic, who is compared with Senator Joseph McCarthy, can take over the country. The film also mentions the Greek legend of Orestes who killed his mother because she was evil. It is in its best moments a powerful tragedy of conscience, even if politically vague. John Frankenheimer also did "Seven Days in May, " a fine drama of the arms race.
